The PhytoCOTE project deals with the use of pesticides in agrosystems, their transfers, bioaccumulation and their potential toxicity in the agricultural ecosystem - aquatic ecosystem continuum. It first aims to characterize agricultural practices, including anthropogenic phytosanitary pressure on the plots of the study area in Blayais (right bank of the Gironde estuary). The analysis and modeling of farming methods aims to establish scenarios for changing practices. At the same time, the study site is the subject of an inventory of the contamination by organic and inorganic pesticides of the ecosystems (soils, hydrosystems), the toxic potential of these pesticides and their bioaccumulation in the biota, at different trophic levels. Research must make it possible to assess the risks of contamination but also the flows of pesticides during transfers (water and air) in the continuum. A simulation of the effect of good agroecological practices on the selected study site should make it possible to acquire knowledge relating to the concrete conditions for reducing phytosanitary pressure. Bioeconomic modeling will lead to the evaluation of the costs of these proposed good practices and their acceptability in order to increase the sustainability of agroecosystems, and to achieve the objectives of controlling phytosanitary inputs.

The LEX laboratory is more particularly involved in the assessment of the toxic potential of complex mixtures of pesticides from passive samplers placed in the waterways of the study area. The toxicity of the molecules used on the plots is studied on two species of marine microalgae as part of Valentin Dupraz's thesis. Within this project, the objectives of Valentin Dupraz's thesis (2015-2018, Ifremer/ Epoc-LPTC thesis) aimed to: i) perform the toxicity screening of a panel of pesticides chosen on marine microalgae (Skeletonema marinoi, Tetraselmis suecica and Tisochrysis lutea); ii) assess the toxicity of binary mixtures of pesticides on marine microalgae, using laboratory modeling approaches; iii) compare the toxicity of complex mixtures from the study environment by using extracts from POCIS-type passive samplers and propose an interpretation of this toxicity in the light of the characterization of the chemical contamination of the site. Study carried out as part of the PHYTOCOTE project.
