TOPHYPAC is a study on the Charente estuary (Marennes-Oléron basin). The general objective of the project was to assess the possible impact of chemical contamination by copper and pesticides on phytoplankton communities. Environmental monitoring including physical, chemical parameters such as nutrients, metals and pesticides, and biological (phytoplankton) was carried out from 2011 to 2014; this monitoring was coupled, in 2012 and 2013, with an experimental approach on phytoplankton communities transplanted in the laboratory and exposed to copper and two mixtures of herbicides. The effects of the contaminants tested were researched on photosynthesis and phytoplankton abundances.

At the environmental level, the TOPHYPAC project has made it possible to draw up an inventory of the contamination of the estuary by pesticides and to describe the seasonal variations in the abundance of phytoplankton in relation to the physical and chemical environment (nutrients and metals) of estuary (Guesdon, Stachowski-Haberkorn et al., 2016). At the experimental level, exposure of communities to copper demonstrated a very marked sensitivity of Synechococcus sp. to copper, with threshold effect values ​​sometimes of the order of µg.L-1. The herbicide mixtures tested did not lead to any significant effects at environmental concentrations.
